DeLand, FL — The Volusia County Supervisor of Elections is proud to announce that the office has received an Honorable Mention in the prestigious U.S. Election Assistance Commission Clearie Awards for its project, “Mapping Voter Access: Using Geospatial Data to Optimize Early Voting Locations.”
The award recognizes election offices across the country that implement creative and effective practices to improve election administration and voter services.
The project analyzed voter travel patterns during the 2024 General Election to better understand how far voters were driving to cast their ballots during early voting and identify opportunities to improve accessibility for voters who prefer this method of voting.
The initiative was conducted through a collaborative partnership between the Supervisor of Elections Office and the County of Volusia’s GIS/IT team.
“This recognition highlights our office’s commitment to continuously improving voter access and enhancing the voting experience for all residents of Volusia County,” said Supervisor Lewis. “By using data-driven analysis and working alongside our County GIS professionals, we are able to better understand voter behavior and make informed decisions that help us serve voters more effectively.”
The study identified areas where voter access could potentially be improved, while also recognizing challenges related to the availability of approved early voting locations. The analysis additionally confirmed the importance of expanding services in West Volusia following the relocation of the Supervisor of Elections Office. As a result of the findings, the office is adding a ninth early voting site for the 2026 Election cycle.
